BWWE Celebrates Juneteenth - Free Black History Bingo Download!

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

Juneteenth, a combination of June and 19th, is a time to celebrate, gather, and reflect on the past and look to the future.

For those who may not know, Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved (approximately 250,000) in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States. It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. The unfortunate part about this is the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln (this meant that the Proclamation only applied to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery intact in border states and Southern states under Northern control).

January 1st was also a celebration for many African American churches. On the night of December 31, 1862, enslaved and free African Americans gathered, many in secret, to ring in the new year and await news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect, which coined the term, Watch Night Service.

This year, BWWE would like to commemorate Juneteenth in a variety of ways, virtually and in person.
